Tiles are notorious for presenting a slip-hazard when wet. We've all had that uh-oh moment when hosting friends and family on outdoor tiled areas like al-fresco dining spaces or swimming pools, juggling bags and keys when heading to your front door. The solution is fairly straight forward and, in most cases, completely invisible.
Read on to learn about my anti-slip treatment process.
This customer contacted me after receiving my flyer in the mail.
A month earlier, while entertaining family, one of their grandchildren had slipped on the tiles in the backyard and hurt themselves. The tiles around the pool weren't the problem, they had a different, rough-textured tile, but the rest of the tiles in the backyard would get really slippery.
The customer was also concerned about guests slipping on the front steps, so they asked me to come, have a look and provide a quote on anti slip treatment.

The anti-slip treatment chemically etches the surface of the tile, so a glossy tile will have a slightly matte finish once treated. It's always best to do a sample treatment on a spare tile to confirm the customer is happy with the end-result.
In this instance, the change was barely noticeable - which was great for the customer but not-so-good for 'Before' and 'After' photos!
The day before the job, the customer organised for their outdoor furniture to be moved so I could start with a full, deep clean: I sprayed a chemical-cleaning solution, left it for half an hour, then hosed, pressure washed and wet-dry vacuumed the tiles clean.
While the tiles were still wet, the anti-slip solution was sprayed on.
The length of time that the solution is left on the tile will determine how well it works - it generally takes 5 to 10 minutes to chemically etch the tile.
After that, I sprayed on a second solution to neutralise the anti slip chemical.
Once this was complete, the tile was noticeably less slippery, with no change to its appearance.
This job took one day and was $650.00
