Nothing lasts forever! Most shower-cleaning products, repeated scrubbing and general wear-and-tear will expedite the deterioration of grout, making it the number one culprit when diagnosing a leaking shower. I always recommend using epoxy grout, due to its waterproofing properties and durability over time.
Read on to learn about the process I follow when fixing leaking 2-walled showers.
I met this customer at a promotional event. He and his wife were concerned about the bathrooms in their investment property. I offered to assess the issues and provide an obligation-free quote.
This was the main shower in the home and immediately presented a lot of red flags. There were missing seals around perimeter, deteriorating and missing grout around the waste, mould around the silicone in the base and the vertical edges of the shower screen, and extremely rough grout in the walls.
There were also some oddly-cut tiles under the tapware where a leaking pipe must have been fixed previously. Overall, this shower was really rough. The property was soon to be rented the owner wanted it looking good and, more importantly, not leaking.
I removed all the silicone in the shower recess, also removing the shower shelf and other hardware would restrict me when regrouting. I then removed the grout in the base of the shower, around the waste (carefully!), the shower walls up to the top of the shower screen.
I cleaned the shower thoroughly, along with the hardware I removed, and treated everything to the mould. While everything was fan-dried, the owner and I ate lunch together and shared some funny stories about camping adventures we’d both had in the past.
After lunch, it was time to rebuild the shower.
I regrouted the walls in premium trade-quality ultra-white grout. The whole bathroom was cleaned, with special attention to the shower screen, which got a very intense clean and detail. The epoxy grout was mixed in Magellan grey and created the perfect waterproof and mould-resistant seal around the perimeter of the shower base.
I regrouted the rest of the shower base with epoxy grout, then detailed and sponged-off the grout haze. I installed clear bathroom-grade silicone around the vertical edges of the shower screen and then white bathroom-grade silicone up the vertical corner wall joint.
After I cleared out my tools, I gave the whole space a last clean and mop.
This job took 9 hours and cost the customer $990.00*
