Grout will inevitably deteriorate, losing its colour, leaving it looking dull and dirty. Cosmetic regrouting is a game-changer if you want to freshen up your shower and bathroom without the hefty price tag of a full renovation. I always recommend using epoxy grout, due to its waterproofing properties and durability over time.
Read on to learn about the process I follow when doing a cosmetic regrouting job.
Epoxy grouting is quite different from traditional cement-based grouts that most people are familiar with.
If I made a sample of cement-based grout in a ice cube tray, once it cured you could quite easily snap it in half with your hand, the same way you could with a piece of chalk.
If I made that same sample again with epoxy grout it would be rock solid and you'd need a hammer or chisel to damage it.
The other difference with epoxy grout is that it is waterproof, whereas cement based grout is only water-resistant. This is why when I renovate showers, I always regrout the base in epoxy grouts.
Epoxy grouts are more resistant to mould and mildew. They are much easier to clean and won't degrade over time like cement-based grout. They hold their colour better too.
The downside of epoxy grouting is that it can be difficult to do. The materials are more expensive to purchase than traditional cement-based grouts, and it takes more time to install.
Epoxy grouts have come a way since first becoming available. I use a multitude of different brands from the likes or Mapei, Ardex, and even make and tint my own epoxy grouts when needed.
Pretty much anywhere that has existing grout can be epoxy grouted:
Indoor or outdoor floor tiles, wall tiles, feature walls, shower bases, stairs, facing on the front of homes.
I have become a a specialist in epoxy grouting mosaic and federation tiles, where most of my competitors can’t. In the pictures you’ll see some of the more difficult jobs that I epoxy grouted.
