Effluence is caused when water penetrates underneath the tile through cracks in the tile or grout, then mixes with the cements and silicas in the tile adhesive. It then evaporates during the day through the same joint it penetrated into and deposits that silica on the tile surface. Think of it as stalactites and stalagmites. It's very hard and very difficult to fully remove.
Read on to learn about the process I follow when eliminating effluence.
We did this job for our customer whose daughter was about to get married. They had family flying in and wanted the house looking fantastic. I had already regrouted the bathrooms and cleaned the interior tiles.
The effluence problem was on the upstairs balcony. The customer didn’t want to spend a fortune on this part of the house so I had to make it look much better on very small budget.
I started the job by laying drop cloths inside the balcony door, then set up my pressure washer and hoses. I cleaned away dirt and leaf matter and put on a breathing mask, heavy rubber gloves and safety glasses.
With a large paint brush, I applied a special acid to the tiles, making the effluence foam up instantly. I continued to paint on the acid, keeping it contained to tiled areas and away from the drain.
It soaked for 10 minutes, allowing time to eat the effluence and soften it. In some sections of the balcony the effluence was 5mm thick and it would take forever for the acid to chemical remove it so I had to scrape it off with a safety blade.
The acid used was so strong that the next day the safety blade turned from chrome to black coloured before rusting. That's why I wear all my safety gear.
With the largest chunks of effluence removed, I continued to painting the acid until the majority of it was removed from the tile.
It would have benefited from a second treatment but because we were on such a tight budget we had to keep it to one treatment and I was able to remove 99% of it.
I treated the area with a ph-neutral solution to neutralise the acid. I then power washed the area with a high-pressure lance. Unfortunately it rained just as I was finishing the clean-up but you can see how much better it looks.
