Grout will inevitably deteriorate, losing its colour, leaving it looking dull and dirty. Cosmetic regrouting is a game-changer if you want to freshen up your shower and bathroom without the hefty price tag of a full renovation. I always recommend using epoxy grout, due to its waterproofing properties and durability over time.
Read on to learn about the process I follow when doing a cosmetic regrouting job.
Cosmetic regrouting can be done on any tiled area: splashbacks in the kitchen, interior floor tiles, exterior tiles, feature walls, bathrooms. Pretty much any where there are tiles, I can regrout them.
In this example, a young couple just moved in to a new unit in my local area. It was a great two-storey, three-bedroom unit with a nice kitchen and great wooden staircase but the showers had deteriorated and looked terrible.
The couple were about to host their parents for a weekend and wanted the showers freshened up.
Although these showers were not leaking I always regrout them as if they were. This way they will be trouble free for years to come.
I started by placing drop sheets on the carpets outside the bathroom door. I then removed all the silicone from the shower recess. I removed hardware to be cleaned separately. The grout was then removed from the shower base and around the waste.
I then removed the grout from the shower walls. The whole shower was treated for mold and deep cleaned. I let that fan-dry while I had lunch.
When I returned, the whole area was clean and dry so I regrouted the shower walls with premium, trade-quality ultra-white grout.
While dried, I cleaned the shower screen and finished cleaning the shower hardware which had been soaking all morning.
I made a two-part resin epoxy grout mix in Magellan Grey. I piped this mix around the perimeter and blended it in the vertical silicone seals. I then piped the epoxy into the shower base and around the waste. I sponged off the excess, detailed the whole area once again and was done.
This shower took one day and cost $900*
