Life finds a way! Mould is bound to make an appearance in any interior space where there's moisture and poor ventilation. It's unsightly and hazardous to your health. Once it's taken hold, it's almost impossible to eliminate with any store-bought or natural product. Same deal with moss in outdoor spaces, with the added danger of causing a slip hazard.
Read on to learn about the process I follow when treating moss and mould.
This shower was in the customer's son's bathroom. The tiles and shower screen were in good condition. The shower wasn't leaking, but the grout and the silicon had been destroyed by mould.
The mosaic tile in the shower was so bad I didn't feel treating the mould would do the trick, so I recommended to replace the mosaic with a plain white tile, regrout the shower and replace the silicone.
After laying drop cloths from the bathroom to the front door and setting up my tools outside, I removed the soap holders and soaked them in cleaning solution in the vanity sink. I removed the silicone from the shower, up the shower screen, around the bath perimeter and bath table.
I cleaned the entire bathroom with a mould and mildew treatment. Then I cleaned and scrubbed the shower with an acid to etch the grout and ensure the mould was well gone.
I chose not to remove the mosaic tile, as it would have taken too long given the budget I was working to. Once it was cleaned and etched, I cut a new tile to fit into the shower shelf and adhered it over the top of the old mosaic tile.
The whole area was left to dry while I took my lunch break.
It was then time to make the bathroom look pretty again: I regrouted the whole shower and bath shelf. While that dried, I cleaned the shower screen making it look good as new, then gave the soap holder a good scrub and reinstalled it.
I prepped the bathroom joints with acetone and applied a bathroom-grade white silicone around the bathroom perimeter, up the vertical wall joints, the shower shelf and bath shelf. I then switched to a clear silicone for the vertical joint between the shower screen and tile. The whole bathroom was given one last clean and detail and it was done.
